Project “Bioactive Cell Filters” – ARTCLINE publishes final report

ARTCLINE published the final report for the project innovation forum “bioactive cell filters”. This project was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) with the grant number 01HI1008.

The goal of the project is the investigation and promotion of the use of biologically active cellular filters in the intensive care medicine but also outside of the medical area. The innovation forum was specifically intended to investigate which new products based on the technology of bioactive cell filters can be defined for various application and problem areas. Furthermore, the required effort for research, development and adaptation for applications in different areas should be outlined. Based on this, a strategy on how to achieve this goal and how to implement the lessons learned should be discussed with various stakeholders.

During the project, ARTCLINE cooperated with several institutions on various levels. Particularly noteworthy is the collaboration with the Medical Faculty of the University of Rostock and the Fraunhofer-Institute for Immunology and Cell Therapy. This cooperation could be deepened by the project and will strengthen the network character.

The achieved results are an important step and will strengthen the positioning of the technology in the medical and scientific area.

According to the final report, one of the first concrete measures is the “further development of the existing technology”. In particular, the existing technological solution should be simplified. The goal is to overcome the obstacles for the market entry and to increase the user acceptance.

The intention is also to work together with associates in order to improve the degree of purity of the bioactive cells. In this context one task is also the improvement of the storability of the bioactive cells. The existing cooperation with the University of Rostock will be further expanded. The aim is the further optimization of the applicability of the technology.

Actually, an application for a ZIM-KOOP project is currently being carried out in order to implement the work. So, the technical principles will be developed based on the strategic goals and applications decided in the forum. This would enable the further development of additional innovative products. The duration of the development project is estimated at 2 years. The subsequent further step up to “market readiness” will presumably take another 3 years.

The prospects of the scientific success and the connectivity of the results are doubtless given. The identification and discussion of other fields of application leads into several questions that will initially be the subject of the scientific research. It concerns e.g. the stabilization of bio-active cells for their use in filters. Suitable stabilization techniques have not been successfully tested yet. Referring to this a further productive cooperation with the Fraunhofer-Institute for Immunology and Cell Therapy (IZI) in Leipzig is planned.
